Hi,

I've bought a 3 button (left, right + wheel) Microsoft mouse which is really
excellent but the left mouse button has recently starting to squeak like the
mechanism is tired or something. Can anything be done about this? Its one of
these otical mice without any apparent way to open it up.

Thanks,
Alain

I feel your pain. Something is rubbing against something else when you click the mouse. You'll have to take the mouse apart to find out what's doing it. In my case, the left button of my (Logitech) cordless mouse caused the spring holding one of the batteries to squeak.

For future reference;

I deal with maintain a large number of computer systems. I can tell you
from personal experience, based on 20+ years, that Microsoft hardware is not
up to par.
Microsoft mice and keyboards have a lower build quality than most others on
the market. i believe that Microsoft regards mice and keyboards as
disposable, and subsequently do not build them to last very long.

In the future I encourage you to consider other brands; Logitech is a
particular standout. Their hardware is the best in the business for
keyboards and mice, and the software is much better than the stuff that MS
makes. I can state this from years of experience.

I beg to differ. My MS optical mouse and MS Internet Pro Keyboard
have both worked flawlessly for over 4 years now. Never had a problem
with either of them.

And both of them are still going strong.

I'm with you. My MS mouse and keyboard operate flawlessly. OTOH, I just got
a Logitech cordless desktop for work, and the sqeaking mouse is driving me
nuts. I also prefer the 'smooth scrolling' of MS mice (no 'bumps' as you
turn the scroll wheel).

That said, Logitech does appear to be the leader in keyboards and mice, and
Microsoft does seem to have limited interest in this hardware. As evidence:
Microsoft's latest line of so-called comfort keyboard dersktop sets was
heavily discounted shortly after it first appeared (unlike Logitech's newest
line).
