Mouse hanging then going again

I am using a Sony RX 571 with 512 memory and XP home. When
using a mouse the computer hangs for 4 or 5 seconds each
time the mouse is moved. I checked the available memory
and it shows 230mg available. This is true on all
programs. Do I need more memory or any suggestions.
