Mouse freezing up

Is anyone else having the problem where the mouse freezes? You click on a
tab, or a buttom...and nothing happens. It is as if the Window you are
working in is in-Active. I click elsewhere...and come back and click on the
Window again...most of the times that corrects the problem. Also some times
I feel the alignment of the Mouse pointer to what you are clicking on is
slighly off.....the smaller the buttom/Icon you are clicking on the more
difficult it is to get the mouse action to align and work. For instance,
Closing a Window using the Right upper Corner "x". I must move it to the
area carefully as sometimes it goes to the double sided arrow....to re-size
window, rather than remain in its normal arrow to click on the X to close the
window.

Brand new Cordless Mouse (because I thought that maybe the problem was due to
my 3 year old Cordless Mouse)....and New fresh batteries. When I refer to
freezing up.....the problem is only at times not being able to click on an
item.....caption buttons, etc. But when this happens I can move the Mouse
pointer just fine. So its not entirely a freeze-up....its a denial of
getting an item to click and run..... I wrote, its like the item I want to
click on is not active....but if I wait, or click on other areas and come
back to the item, it will then eventually work. This happened with both my
older mouse and this new one, so I am ruling out the mouse as a cause.

CTL/ALT/DEL to start Task Monitor, when minimised it puts a
little CPU utilisation monitor in the system tray, or you can
leave it maximized.
When my mouse, or rather mice, I have tried several, freeze,
it's because CPU ultilization is at 100%.
You can with it maximized see which processes, using
the Processes tab, which processes are causing the 100%.

not to put too fine a point on it, your are describing exactly how my mouse
acts when the battery is weak....by new fresh battery do you mean the one
that came with it or a new one? the one that came with my Logitech was
nearly dead. I have also found uninstalling the Logitech software has
worked wonders in the way my mouse works.

Had it initially when I installed Vista 64bit Ultimate
with 512Mb of RAM. It seemed to be spending most
of its time moving data in/out of RAM and cache.
While it was moving data, mouse would only move,
sometimes jerkily, but wouldn't push buttons,
launch more programs, respond to X close, etc.
4GB Crucial fixed that.
Also wireless mice can suffer from the receiver
being plugged into, and shielded by the case.
A USB extender works wonders by putting the
receiver nearer the mouse.
Also some rapidly drain the batteries, and
only work well for a couple of days with new
batteries. The 2xAAA batteries seem the worst.
Rechargeable, with cradle mice also a problem,
if the mouse is out of the cradle for most
of the time, batteries not getting sufficient
charge.
Converted mine to run off a power cube so it
charges at 10mA including overnight, also put in
2500mAh NiMH's in a 2xAA cordless mouse.
