Mouse freezes up

Hi: I am using Windows XP Home .
When I am working on a project , my mouse stops moving and I can't get to
close any programs or move the mouse at all. I then have to shut down the
computer and reboot it for the mouse to get back to normal.
Anybody know how to fix this , I would be very bappreciative . Thanks
Moe

Hi Moe,

Need more info.

Clarify, "working on a project". What program?

Does the keyboard still work? Can you Alt-Tab to other open programs
and work? Is Windows still functioning?

Is it a USB or PS2 mouse? Have you tried switching to another mouse?

What programme are you using when working on your project?

What is the CPU and how much RAM does the computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on ther Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

You are going to "try" a different mouse, or you already have tried a
different mouse?

You didn't say anything about it being a wireless mouse, so changing
batteries is a useless suggestion. If it was working previously, your
CPU and RAM have nothing to do with it either, UNLESS your CPU fan is
not working or the heatsink may be filled with dust.

If the whole system locked up, check all your fans (power supply fans
also), and vents. The system could be overheating and locking up.

Otherwise you could try a System Restore and go back to a date before
the issue began, if it works at all.

To answer your questions :
Ram is 2G, under commit charge :total 657144,Limit 1134028, peak 791540
Thanks for your help , and lets see if there is an answer to correct this .

If it's a ball mouse, did you remove the bottom plate and clean the roller
shafts with pencil eraser? (Shafts that ball rotate)

It makes no difference what program I have open , it varies when it freezes

Then go back and see my reply to you from yesterday.

perhaps a broken wire? What happens if you unplug the mouse and
re-insert? (also lose the sig separator if you are not bottom posting,
it trashes the quotes.)
