Hey there. Really am hoping someone can help me out.

After I "upgraded" to Windows 2003 server, my mouse has taken on a
new personality. Whenever I access any extracurricular mouse
activity, e.g. in IE 6.0, click File...New... it hangs for about 6
seconds like it's trying to figure out the various options. This
behavior does not happen when I access the menus via my keyboard. I
tired installing a new Microsoft USB mouse, but I get the same
behavior. This behavior occurrs whenever I'm scrolling down a drop
down menu that has extended break-out arrow menus... Obviously this
drives me insane.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your posting.

According to your post, you encounter unexpected freeze only when using
mouse in random action.

If I have misunderstood your concern please don't hesitate to let me know.

1. Per the problem symptom, I suggest firstly remove and then reinstall the
mouse's driver to ensure the component's integrity:

a. Please keep the USB Mouse connected, go to Control Panel => System =>
Hardware => Device Manager
b. Click to expand the USB Controller branch, right click the sub option to
uninstall all the listed suboptions.
c. Click to expand the Mice and other pointing devices branch, right click
the sub option to uninstall all the listed suboptions.
d. Reboot your computer, Win2003 will automatically detect the device,
install its driver according to the further instructions.

2. If the problem still remains after that, to purify the troubleshooting
environment, please perform the following steps:

a. Click Start => Run => Type "msconfig" (without quoting marks), and then
press Enter.
b. In the System Configuration Utility window, check the "Selective
Startup" option.
c. Clear all the options below Selective Startup.
d. Click OK to close the window. Reboot the computer.
e. Try to reproduce the problem to check whether the mouse freeze problem
still remains.

Note: During the process, system display and Desktop will look and perform
differently compared with Normal Mode. This is only temporary. You can
click Start => Run => msconfig => Check the "Normal Startup" option to
restore the initial computer status.

If problem no longer occurs after that, refer to further troubleshooting
steps listed in the following KB article:

325375 HOW TO: Troubleshoot Startup Problems in Windows Server 2003

Hope it help!

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your reply.

1. This behavior can occur due to registration failure of the urlmon.dll
file. We need to reregister the file to resolve the problem.

a. Click Start => Run, type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without quoting marks)
in the Run box, and then click OK.
b. After the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message pops up,
launch IE and then create a new window to test the situation.

If the problem still remains, use the same "regsvr32" command to finish
registering the following files:

Shdocvw.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

c. Reboot computer and then test the situation.

2. If problem still remains, to test if it's related to specific user
profile, please create a new user account, and then log in with the new
account to test the situation.

Hi. Thanks again for following up with me.

I wanted to clarify a couple of things. The mouse behavior (freezing)
occurrs in all windows applications, not just the browser. I was just
using that as an example. Also, I did try installing a new Microsfot
USB mouse, to no avail. Additionally, when I use my keyboard only to
access drop down/pop up menus, they work fine, with no freezing.

I followed your last directions with no success.

Thanks,

Steve Walker

Dear Steve,

Since the freeze problem also occurs in newly created user profile, our
troubleshooting scope is narrowed down on Win2003. I suggest perform a test
in Safe Mode:

Safe Mode: It's a special Windows diagnostic mode, in which problem keeping
Windows from starting normally can be resolved there. Note that some of
your devices might not be available in this mode, and the screen might use
a lower resolution with lower number of colors.

a. Boot your computer, press F8 during the process and enter Advanced
Option menu.
b. Select "Safe Mode", and then press Enter.
c. Boot to Windows 2003, and then test the mouse's performance.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Safe mode was one of the first things I tried, with similar results,
e.g. the mouse still freezes on and pop-out/up menu.

Thanks,

Dear Steve,

Before we go further, may I have a summary of what we've performed before
for your review, thanks.

To ensure the Win2003's integrity, I suggest you repair it using the
following steps:

You may refer to your computer manual for information on how to do this.
b. Insert the Windows 2003 CD into your CD-ROM and reboot your computer.
c. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD¡ " on the screen, press a
key to let your computer boot from the Windows 2003 CD.
d. When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it check your hardware and then
prompt you the following options.
