I have loaded a Compaq 100 laptop with XP update 3, "new PC disk".
It loads slowly, but shows no errors. However, the machine is unusable, via
either the pad or plugged-in mouse. The cursor jumps all over; can't get it
so do anything.
Also, when START is hit, the screen comes up; the arrow keys seem to work,
but the screen goes back to the version before start within a minute. From
what I have seen, there is a problem with the mouse driver, but the condition
of the machine is such that I can't get it online to request an update. The
machine has a CD drive and a floppy drive, with available USB ports as well.
Does not accept DVD. Also, I tried to load Acronis 2010 backup and recovery
upon boot; got error "no cmov in kernel". Original os Win98.

Go to the Compaq website with another machine. Download all the drivers for
the laptop and burn them to CD. Start the machine in safe mode and see if the
touchpad works. Install the drivers from the CD, start with the chipset
driver first. Read the instruction manual on the Compaq website for
instructions to start the machine in safe mode.

Try to start in Safe Mode. Hit F8 repeatedly as you turn on the machine.

How much RAM memory and hard disk space did you have on this machine?
Win98 is 12-year-old technology. Perhaps it's time to replace the unit.
