Whenever Access 97 is open, the CPU usage goes to 100%.
Microsoft acknowledges this problem and has corrected it
in Access 2000. However, they said it should not effect
the operation of the machine. I have one machine that
sometimes works fine, but most of the time, when Access is
open, the mouse is very jumpy and input by the keyboard
must entered in slowly. The system misses keys hit. I
have Office service pack 2 and Windows 2000 Service pack 5
installed.

Is this whenever Access is open, or whenever a certain
database is open? Does it happen on all databases? You can
always test with opening the Northwind sample db. Also, you
may try turning your anti-virus program off and see if that
makes a difference. I've used 97 for years with no problem
except one time my anti-virus brought help to it's knees.
The solution was to disable virus checking of .mdb files.

Gary,
I just tried disabling the anti-virus. It did not work.
We have been using Access 97 since it first came out. We
have just migrated to Windows 2000. We just came off of
Windows 98. We never had a problem. The other computers
we have are not experiencing the problem. Just this one.
We thought it was memory. We changed it and played with
it. No difference.
I would go to Access 2000, however, that would mean a
rewrite of all of our programs.
We are using the jet engine for Access 97. If I cannot
find the problem, I will be placing Office 2000 on a
machine to try.
Thanks for the input

Nick,

Have you installed the latest version of Jet for Access97? I
think I do recall some W2K problems with early versions. I
can't recall which is the latest version.

Access 97's 100% CPU usage has never been a problem because it is on the
lowest priority thread and thus gives up control at almost any OS request.
Your problem is not with Access or with the specific database. If it were,
you'd see it on other similar machines. The fact that it is on only one
machine leads me to believe that it is either a driver or hardware problem
on that one machine. Whenever I diagnose problems like this, I start with
the NIC, and then go to the Video driver and Video card.

You may want to also ask this question in a Windows 2000 and/or a hardware
newsgroup.
