Mounting screws?

When I installed my motherboard (over a year ago) there was no mention of
installing mounting screws. However, after a bunch of posts in this
newsgroup about people frying motherboards without mounting screws, should I
bother to install some? Right now its screwed directly onto the little
"struts" coming off of the case.

Thanks,
Mitchua

By 'struts', do you mean 'brass standoffs'? If so, that's the correct way
for it to be mounted. Also, using paper washers (usually red) for the
screws. If it were mounted incorrectly, you would know. Because, your PC
would not power on. The motherboard would short, on the case.

Just curious -- why do you need the paper washers?

It keeps the metal screw out of contact with the board, preventing
electrical issues as well as cushioning the board so the screw doesn't
damage the area around the hole.

I don't know any modern (<4 years) boards that specifically call for these
paper washers to be used. These days, they have a safe area around the hole
which is both shielded from the board electronically as well as being more
metal around the hole so the screw won't damage the board.

They're not necessary, as another poster stated, on today's boards. But, I
like to play it safe. Also, I find old habits hard to break. :)

Shouldn't there be one screw without the washer, for grounding, or am I
just sleep-typing this as it's almost 4am....?
