Hello all,

Just curious to know if keeping a computer on 24/7 will ruin a motherboard?
My m/b just died on me (when switched the computer on it didn't do anything,
just blank) and was wondering if it was related to me keeping my machine
going all the time.

I have a P4 2.8Ghz with 512MB ram

Our computers are running 24/7 all the time, except for being cleaned out
from any dust, and checking that all the fans are working properly.

The key is to have a very good power supply, and lots of cooling.

That would depend largely on the system heat level, surge protection and
system board quality. So, your answer is: Maybe yes, maybe no.

Well just out of curiosity are there any programs that tell me how hot my
cpu is running? (or is it just something located in the BIOS?)

How do you define a "good power supply"? Is it by brand name?

Most of the recent motherboards have the cpu temp displayed in the BOIS
settings. I am sure your P4 2.8 board will have it. If not, check out
MDM5 program. It will work with a multitude of boards.
 
I have 3 boxes in my place, all three run 24/7. One of them has been
hardcore overclocked, and the other two are just average PC's. None of them
run hot, and none of them have had any problems. one of them has been
running for around a year and a half straight (Ocassional shut down for like
10 mins or so around 2 or 3 times a month). Your System Bios should give
you an idea of what the temps are. Most systems have sensors built intot he
mobo itself.
