Motherboard RAM Support

Hey all,

Anyone know of any good boards out there that support faster than 400
MHZ RAM? Most ASUS boards, which I hear are really good, say they
support PC3200, yet I was considering getting something a bit better
than PC3200. Is it ok to install faster RAM than what the board
supports?

Any ideas?

What processor do u have in mind?

Right now I'm using an AMD XP 1900+, but it seems no good boards(a
least the one's I've looked at) support those. They normally eithe
support Intels(yuck) or AMD 64, FX, or X2s. So I guess I should jus
get one of those

Anywho, seems most ASUS boards don't support anything beyond PC3200 a
I said before. Nor can I find an ASUS board that will support DDR
RAM

Maybe I'm just blind

Seems to me the P5 series uses DDR2 and faster memory.

Well you do know that you're trying to find a motherboard for a
processor that is outdated and no longer available, right?

AMD Socket 462, 754, 939: DDR400 max (officially*)
Intel Socket 478: same
Intel Socket 939 and upcoming AMD Socket M2: DDR2 400/533 and above.

Socket 462 does not worth faster DDR. If you don?t plan to replace your
processor, keep your modules.
Despite the official memory speed limit (*JEDEC specification), there?s
no problem using DDR500, 550 and above in S478, S754 or S939 Systems. Most
good motherboards will take advantage of that modules when overclocking,
specially Intel ones.
If you buy a new Intel system, get a DDR2 based.

(sorry my bad english, I?m from BraSil) :-)

The boards support what is appropriate for the CPU support.
Any board with some overclockers' features will allow
manually raising the memory bus, and you can buy > PC3200
modules and install in any board.

However, without specific reasons it almost seems arbitrary
that you want to simply "choose faster memory". Most often
newer builds that aren't overclocked, will use lower memory
timings such as 2,2,2,5, rather than higher memory bus
speed. Raising memory bus speed is then overclocking and
you might still choose the lower (faster) memory timings if
only you buy high enough spec (quality*?*) memory to support
that. Essentially you have no limit in what board you
choose, only that it has the normal settings for memory
timings and bus speeds which the majority of retail boards
these days do support, unlike the typical OEM boards.
