Dell Vostro 1520 motherboards with Part No U653J and Part No 0D46F.
Can someone define what is the difference between them?
Which part number is for Motherboard with on-board Nvidia video chipset?

All I could find, was this Dell page.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1520/en/SM/td_proc.htm

It shows the cooler assembly, and how it connects to the motherboard.
Note that the cooler pipe at the top of the page, is shorter than the
rest of the ones in the other diagrams. It could be, that the
discrete GPU option, is the third chip on the end. The top pipe isn't
long enough to cover a discrete GPU. Since a good GPU burns up a few
watts of power, it needs a heatpipe cooler (either sharing one
with other chips, or having its own private pipe with fins on the end).
When looking at pictures, this tends to limit where the GPU could be
located. Sometimes, the GPU is a plugin module, and there is a connector
on the motherboard, where it plugs in. But smaller laptops don't have
room for a big module like that.

When I checked various sources of images (such as searching on
ebay.com versus Google images), I can find pictures of U653J and
0D46F, and they both have what I believe is the discrete graphics
(third chip, near end of pipe).

The chips on the board could be processor, GM45, NB9M-GS 9300M-GS GPU,
from left to right. Just a guess.

Maybe someone else will have better luck when they search...
I couldn't positively identify a significant difference in
the various pictures I could find.

I wasn't able to find a "Dell parts store". HP has their HP Parts
Store, in which you can get a BOM (bill of materials) for each
computer, and from that, you can get some good info on HP part
numbers. But I wasn't able to find the same thing for Dell.
Only Dell "accessories".

Thanks, thats makes things more clear.
I can no identify my Vostro 1520 M/b model: there are no label with Dell
Part No on m/b, only generic label with barcodes where printed KML50D.
Dell setup brochure that came with laptop say it have discrete video NVIDIA
GeForce 9400GS 64-bit. (I'm not sure if this is actually though as it may
be just the generic brochure for all models).I showed laptop to dell repair
service, but repair guy could not find a label too. Perpahs M/b was some
OEM product.
If I buy a M/b with Nvidia GeForce 9300M video chip, can I use it in my
laptop if there was M/b with GeForce 9400GS 64-bit chip?

So then the part number must be the KLM50D one. The D probably
stands for Discrete.

But Dell should be able to help you, based on the Service Tag. The
Service Tag probably has associated with it, scans of the components
installed in the thing when it was built. Dell should know what
motherboard was put in it.

When you look at modern components, anything that unplugs from the
computer has a stick (like the SODIMMs, hard drive, optical drive
and so on). I'd also expect the motherboard to have a serial number
on it, and even if the KLM50D number is useless, the serial number
of the motherboard may also point to what it is.

What I'm having trouble figuring out, is where you buy motherboards
straight from Dell. Do they only sell through an authorized service
center ?

KLM50D is not a part number, I saw a lot M/b pictures with this part number
but it was with intel integrated graphic (UMA). Service Tag does not help
much, they can no identify it based on my Tag. I tried search info on Dell
website based on Service tag, but it returns just generic details, laptop
model. The Dell authorized Service center ask $296 for motherboard + $47
work, I dont want buy from them. I'm expecting to find cheaper somewhere.
