How do you Move a Windows xp Installation to Different
Hardware (motherboard)

Well, I just did that.

I swapped out a Chaintech MoBo with 1Gig Celeron for a 2.6G Pentium 4 on an
Abit MoBo.

When I powered up, I made sure that only the essential peripherals were
connected (ie no printers, modems, joysticks, USB devices). Before I
installed any drivers, I made sure that no other programs were running
(virus scanners etc).

Then I re-started the box and started to plug in the USB devices etc.
Worked fine for me. XP also told me there had been a signifcant change to
the hardware (!) and I needed to re-activate in 3 days. I did this
straight away by phone - no problems dead easy.

I'd be keen to hear from the qualified folks in this group if this is an OK
thing to do, it seems to have worked fine!

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.),
you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade)
installation, at the very least:

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This may also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
