My HD Model: WD1002FAEX-00Z3A (other specs below)

HD Tune gives me a warning: Current Pending Sector 1, Current 200
Worst 200 Threshold 1

WD Data lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows says "Quick Test on Drive 1
did not complete! Status Code =07 (Failed test element), Failure
Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test), Smart Test did not complete.

But I also received a multiple Windows 7 Event Errors: The driver
detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR5.

Windows Checkdsk showed a file that needed it's clusters moved. That's
about it.

Does it sound like I am dealing with one or more issues? How can I
troubleshoot? My HD is still under warranty. However, I am not so sure
about my Asus MB.

One. The drive has at least one bad sector.
How can I troubleshoot?

Post the Everest SMART report on the drive.

Its the drive, not the motherboard.

Thanks Ron! I can always count on you :)

I did an Acronis backup and it took a very long time, much more so
than it should...especially since I had 694 GB free/1000 GB. Acronis
validated the backup but there seems to be some corruption with
Windows. I cant run HDTUNE any more. It's just hanging. I have an LBA
Error at 3537408.

Here is the SMART report. Should I do a fresh install after I get my
drive RMAed or use an Acronic almost fresh install original from last
year?

Thanks Ron. I can always count on you! Just an FYI. My Acronis
backup took a very long time to create, it passed the validation but
had one error in thet LBA 3537408. Should I use my original Acronis
backup or install the same one and have Windows try to repair if
necessary? I have a feeling some data maybe corrupt on the latest
image even though W7 isnt detecting it.

Yeah, thats clearly the pending sector, its going bad.

Not clear what you mean there.

I have a feeling some data maybe corrupt on the
latest image even though W7 isnt detecting it.

A pending sector means that the drive did eventually get the data
from that sector fine, it just needed quite a few retrys to get the data.

So a restore using the latest backup should be fine.

Likely it took a long time to get the data from that pending sector, lots of retrys.

But it did get the data from that sector eventually.

Likely something HDTUNE uses is in that sector and it doesnt retry forever.

Thats the pending sector.

The latest backup should be fine. If thats got any visible
problems when used, use the backup from last year.

Thats the problem with the drive, that one sector which needs to
be read repeatedly to be able to be read successfully eventually.

Ron, I am dumbfounded now. I am still waiting for the RMA'ed drive
which should be here shortly. Perhaps you can shed some light on
this.

I just ran HDTUNE again, this time absolutely no pending sectors are
shown. I also ran WD Diagnostic utillity from Windows and unlike
before it passed the SMART test. Below is the new updated info on the

Because the pending sector has gone.

Pending sectors are those that were difficult to read.

So its got an intermittent fault that has now gone away for a while.

I'd replace it when the replacement shows up.
