Since a few hours my ECS motherboard (K7VTA2) is NOT bootable any more.

When I turn on the power it starts beeping forever without showing boot sequence as usual.

How do I revert the BIOS to the factory settings ?
Setting the jumper1 to clear the CMOS did not help.
Removing the motherboard battery does not help as well.

What should I do?

Peter

You would need to find out who makes your BIOS (Award, etc.) and then do a
websearch on [BIOS Manufacturer] Post beep codes. This will let you
diagnose what the problem is. Could be multiple things like bad memory, bad
video card, blown processor, etc. Might just be that one of those items
(video, mem, etc.) got jarred and is loose. Maybe dirty connection which
would require you to remove and reinstall the item.. Who knows. Check out
the Beep Codes, and post back...

Removing the M/B battery for about 5-30 minutes DOES reset the bios to the
defaults. No way it can not.

As to your previous post, will it work if you remove the new 2 DDR sticks and
replace it with the old SDR stick?

Does it really beep forever, or just very often? If "very often",
count the beeps and have a look in the bios beep code table.
It may be something like "CPU failed" or "no RAM found".
The table may be in the manual, but more likely on the webpage
of the BIOS manufacturer.

It is usually not a BIOS setting issue.

If it beeps forever, then the keyboard controller (it does the
initial checking and is responsible for giving the beek codes,
and yes, that is how a "CPU failed" can be found and singnaled)
is defect. The only reaonable repair is a maiboard replacement.

I'd consult the manual to see what continuous beeping means. The
motherboard is trying to tell you what it thinks is wrong.

But I suspect a new motherboard might be what you'll end up doing.

Hi Peter.

What happened or what changed right before it strated beeping? Could be
processor, motherboard from the sounds of it so far.

You just did below.
Setting the jumper1 to clear the CMOS did not help.

Try removing all cards and reseating the
memory and see if you can stop that beeping.

If that doesnt help, check the motherboard for bad caps.
Those are the usually blue or black plastic covered post
like things sticking up vertically from the motherboard
surface. The tops should be flat. If any have bulged or
are leaking, its the bad caps that are the problem and
you need a new motherboard or new system.

check all connections, reseat all boards, reseat memory sticks, and
make certain power is off and you are grounded to the case while doing
these things.

Usually beeping instead of booting means invalid or incorrectly installed
RAM. Verify the RAM is compatible with the motherboard, then verify it is
installed securely in the correct slot(s). If you pass both checks, it is
likely bad, suggest trying different RAM. Check other parts as well. It is
possible the same could occur with an invalid or incorrectly installed video
card...

Beeps occur when the motherboard fails its Power-On Self Test (POST).
The way it beeps describes the probable problem area.
You need to find a webpage that will tell you what the beep codes mean.
Try this one:

Try different RAM. If that does not help, attach the motherboard to your
wall for a nice piece of artwork.

How about going to the store around the corner and getting a new
battery? Take the old one along with you to make sure you get the exact
same kind.

Good luck, Robert

But serves no purpose if the cmos on the motherboard is defective. Dog
chasing his tail.
