Most of my file extensions havebeen changed to .lnk. I cannot open these
programs anymore. I am still able to get on the internet and get into my
hotmail but that is pretty much it. Anyone ever encountered this before? If
so, can it be fixed without reinstalling windows?

Shortcuts to programs are usually .LNK files. You don't normally see
the extension, but it's there. Try the LNK association fix here and see
if that helps:

Fix File Associations.

Thank you for the response. I tried to download and run the program you
suggested but it would not let me run it the icon showed as one that did not
have a file association.

It's a short little .zip file titled linkfile_fix.zip After you click
it find where it was downloaded to your hd, run the zip file and merge
the file linkfile_fix.reg into the registry. You can view the file from
your unzip utility first to see what it does.

Hi again. I realize that is a zip file, but the problem is that windows does
not recognize the file, it does not recognize any file I try to open that is
already on my computer, nor any that I download. It does not recognize any
type of file because thefile is changed to an .lnk fileas soon I it is on the
computer. I fear I am going to have to reinstall windows........ I do thank
you for trying to help me with this.

Try renaming the file with whatever extension it is whether it's an .exe,
..zip, .avi.

God Bless... :-)

Hi Parrott, Thank you for your response, I tried that also to no avail. I am
going to reinstall windows today and want to thank you and Elmo for your time
and effort in regards to this problem.
