Everytime I try to run a .exe file I get the
message "Windows cannot find 'the file'. Make sure you
typed the name correctly, and then try again.". Internet
explorer works fine but pretty much all other exe files
dont (including system tools). How can I fix this?

Hi,

I would suggest you to backup your files and then format
the C: drive and clean install XP. Download and save the
latest XP compatible drivers for all your devices. Update
the mobo BIOS and chipset drivers would also improve the
overall performance of your PC.
It may take a whole day to perform these tasks but after
all, you would find it is worth to do so.

I only have an upgrade version of XP. I have a full
version of win 95 so I would have to format c: to fat32,
then install win 95, then upgrade it to XP. There must be
an easier way to do this.
I cant check for viruses because the checkers are .exe
files.

Windows 95 cannot be upgraded to Windows XP.

An upgrade does not require the previous version of Windows to be installed.
You only need to have the CD to prove that you qualify for an upgrade.

To check for viruses: http://www.symantec.com/.

I dont need to format or do anything to windows I dont
think. I thinks its the file type association, exe files
should be associated with applications under file types.
But im not sure how to do this. Thanks for the link, I'm
checkin for viruses now.

Can't run applications
Typically happens when cleaning viruses. Often an error message saying Can't find <some file name>. <some file name> is needed to open files of type application". The file name is the virus, the virus has set itself to run when program is started (and it starts the correct program), and as the virus has been deleted applications cannot run. This will fix this and similar non virus problems.

a.. Type this in dos (window ok if you can start it as you should be able to)
copy %windir%\regedit.exe %windir%\regedit.com
b.. then merge exe_file.reg file and exe will run in regedit.
c.. Type regedit.com in Start - Run to start it, then Registry menu - Import the attached file.
This will allow you to run applications so you can complete you repairs.

The file is attached.

How do you merge the files? And what what attatched file?

If you accessed the groups correctly you wouldn't need to ask. There are millions of you that simply refuse to do things the right way. Youse (def. Australian plural of you) expect me to type over and over again the same instructions. When you came here you were given two choices. Idiots choice and the proper way. You chose to use web.

I saw your post when you first posted. I examined the source code of your post to see if there was any point answering (see the extra work you impose on others - have to do that for most posts). There wasn't without having to type a essay. But seeing as you were being given answers that were correct but not the best answers I decided to relent, to my regret. People like you mean I no longer usually answer this type of question. I took pity on you. As I said to my regret.

Click this link. news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain find the thread. If you are stupid enough to use Windows Update you will also have to go into Tools - Options - Security - and clear the checkbox for Prevent Me Accessing David's Fix To Make My XComputer Work.

Your lazyness put work onto others.
