Most embedded pictures/graphics lost - but not all.

Every quarter we create a large (>5MB, 150+ slides)
Powerpoint presentation with embedded pcitures and Excel
graphs. While editing this quarters' Powerpoint
approximately 75% of the pictures and charts became white
boxes with a red X. Fortunately we had a backup in the
same directory so we only lost a couple of hours of work.

A copy from earlier today works great on a laptop
disconnected from our network too.

Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to avoid this
problem in the future?

Thanks,

Here's the truth of it, we simply don't have it nailed down. In fact
several of us are working at trying to uncover the cause. I wish I had a
better answer but there it is. Now, you happen to be one of those rare
users that has a working backup, the corrupted presentation, and hopefully
the images you were working with. And that is exactly what we have been
looking for, that is if there is any way you can share it. You present us
with a unique opportunity to really see how this is happening and I really
hope there is a chance to look it over.

Feel free to contact me via email (the address is real) if you have any
questions or concerns and I'll be happy to work them out with you.
