Hello,

Just out of interest. I am looking for comments about what people consider
to be the most destructive virus/trojan ever. I am not talking about how
widespread it was or how much money it cost industry etc. I mean just how
much destruction of files, registry etc it does to your HDD.

All comments are appreciated.

Frank.

The question borders on the ridiculous. If you don't consider how wide
spread it is or how much money it costs industry, then any malware
that formats your hard drive pretty much sums it up.

Yes, fair comment Bill.

But I thought there was one that screwed up the bios and affected sector
zero of the HDD or something similar. Perhaps not!!!

Not really, viruses that go after the BIOS chip could make a system unusable,

I believe you're referring to Chernobyl?

But the hard drive, with all its valuable data is still intact, and can be
transferred to another system (with bios protection installed this time).

So not so bad as a hard drive overwrite, maybe?

Take care,

John.

Not really. Data diddling payloads which invade your backup strategy are worse than a simple format or BIOS flash
and harddrive corruption payload. But you are right that the OP needs to reconsider what he thinks is important.

I dunno about that, CIH for example not only flashes the BIOS but
infects the executables as well, unless you know enough to clean it (and
just how success those attempts can be) then you're scr*wed again.

Ian - 'tis all opinion.
