I have a winXP pc with a NEC chipset PCI firewire card that used to work but
recently disappeared from device manager. I plugged it into another PC and
it shows up. Some people say sp3 cause the problem. I don't have time to
debug this.

If I buy another PCI firewire card, which one is most likely to work in
winXP sp3, vista, and windows 7?

Did you try plugging it back into yours to see if was recognized? "Some
people" may or may not be right- when did you download and install SP3? Did
the card quit working immediately after the installation? Are there any
errors in event viewer that may point to why the card quit working? In the
time it would take you to go out and purchase a new card, you could check
this one out. And there's no guarantee that the new one will work either, if
"some people" are right. ;-)

The register interface is supposed to be a standard. So in theory,
they'd all behave the same way. (YMMV of course.)

Historically, Texas Instruments (TI), and Lucent/Agere/LSI (company
keeps changing hands), are two brands of chip with good reputations.
NEC might be in that group as well. VIA would be further down the list.
You'll find lots of VIA chips on the boards now, as they're likely
the cheapest to manufacture.

Check the review ratings here, and perhaps you can make up your mind
from the list. Some of these cards may be available locally, for
an impulse buy without worrying about shipping.
