Is there any way to hook up more than 4 IDE devices to a
single computer? I want to hook up two cd roms and three
hard drives. Is this possible with like a splitter or
something?

Buy a PCI controller card and use it for the other devices. You are limited
to a maximum of eight IDE devices; usually four on the motherboard and, with
a suitable controller card, four more.

In theory, you can add as many PCI IDE controller as the number PCI slots
your motherboard has.

Get a mobo with SATA controllers; You'll be able to hook up two more
disks. I think that makes 10 hard disks plus as many CDROM/DVD
devices as you need in USB2/FW. Stop me before I add more......

Where does the "8 IDE devicies" limit come from ?

Don't remember where the 8 IDE devices came from - it is just one of those
items that are stuck in my memory. Probably something I read somewhere.
