More Problems with Nuance PaperPort 11

A question about scanner software: Visioneer 100 comes with an early
version of PaperPort. To upgrade to PaperPort 11, Nuance provides
uninstall/install instructions.

The first problem: After scanning a page into the Visioneer scanner, it
takes about 1.5 minutes for the image to appear, even at b/w 200 dpi.
Google searches show that many customers have the same problem. Version
11 was supposed to fix that. Turns out that there is a work-around so
that scanned images do appear at normal speed -- about 3 seconds -- but
Visioneer and Nuance don't seem to let anyone know about that.

The second problem: Nuance claims that "While you work in another
program, simply select PaperPort Black & White Image or PaperPort Color
Image from your list of available printers and print the file. PaperPort
will automatically convert the file to the default file type specified
under Item options, start PaperPort if it is not already open, and place
the file as an item on the PaperPort desktop."

While two PaperPort "printers" are added during installation, and while
"printing" to them from another program the printer icon appears in the
Task Bar, nonetheless it is impossible to find any trace of the
PaperPort item that was purportedly "printed".

Nuance's instructions and help screens don't have any trouble-shooting
information, which is amazing considering how buggy their PaperPort
products seem to be. I was stunned at how many complaints I found upon
googling "PaperPort" and "problems". In my line of work, I do make
software recommendations for medium size businesses. Until Nuance
provides better support for its product, I could never encourage any
company to buy it.

Does anyone here have any idea how to "print" to PaperPort the way
Nuance claims it can?

Thanks

The words "support" and "Nuance" do not belong in the same sentence.
They shut down the "self-help" group six months ago, although there is
still a link there.

Have you tried the KnowledgeBase for PaperPort 11? Your second problem
comes up from time to time and there may be an article in there.

You don't say which version of PaperPort 11 you have, Pro or
"amateur". But in either case you may want to see if you can work out
how to reinstall the printer drivers.

Also, run a "repair" on PaperPort.

On scanning speed, there are now several options available to you. If
possible, work out how not to use the scanner's own software
interface. PaperPort has a pretty neat interface of its own. But you
have to work out how best to use it. In particular, you should run it
all the way through its own "Advanced setup" routine, even if it says
that you do not need to do so.

As to not recommending PaperPort to anyone else, the trouble comes
when you try to find a viable alternative at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the response. Yes it's curious that there is no real brisk
software competition out there for small business image management,
considering how universal the need is. It certainly hints that the
"intelligence" of the market place is not all that it is claimed to be.

Yes, that's the workaround I used to have scanned images processed at a
reasonable speed. Nuance is insane for not making the info readily
available, especially if Visioneer is not alerting its scanner customers.

I'll certainly try the "repair" and/or reinstallation of PaperPort 11
drivers, but after the holidays (help!!) and after end-of-month imaging
of the hard drive partitions, just in case I have to return to the
drives' current state.

Thanks again, and Cheers

Hey MK,
I had the opportunity to make the harddrive image and feel free to
uninstall the Nuance PaperPort Printers, and do the "Repair". Where
uninstallations with reinstallations hadn't worked, the "Repair" did.
Interesting little feature I hadn't paid attention to in the past.

So thanks for your advice. To bad Nuance can't afford a free or limited
free email tech service. Must be in financial trouble. It's wonderful
that this particular bulletin exists and that there are helpful people
like you on it.

Cheers,
SWB
