Thanks for help re: creating vertical lines on a stacked
bar chart. The site suggested was very helpful. However
it didn't explain how to work out the values for the blank
cell placeholder values so that the line went from the
first bar to the last bar (I have 20 stacked bars).
Can you help??

This was the site that helped me:

Thanks.

If the attributes are being used as simple categories in the chart (most
likely), Excel uses integer values 1, 2, 3 etc behind the scenes while
making the chart. In a column chart (horizontal category axis) you don't
even need secondary axes, you can use 1, 2, 3, for the X values of your
XY series, and everything will work fine. For a bar chart (vertical
category axis) you can't get away with this, so you need a dummy Y axis
which in this case isn't shown because it is obscured by the primary
category axis. If you double clicked on the secondary X axis (top of the
chart) while processing the scatter series, you could check the X Axis
at Maximum Value box in the Scale tab, and make it appear. With this
secondary axis scaled from 0 to N, where N is the number of attributes
on the primary category axis, the vertical positions of the scatter
chart markers must go at 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, etc. Since the categories are
shown in reverse order, you have to put these placeholders in reverse
order to match up with the appropriate attribute.
