Hi I'm quite new to PCs and just bought a Sony VAIO laptop today, with
Windows XP home edition pre-loaded on there.

Is there any way for me to get more colours? The only options I have are:

Medium (16 bit)
Highest (32 bit)

Thanks in advance :)

Short of trading the laptop in for a model with a more capable video
chip, I'm afraid not. However, only a very few high-end graphics cards
support 64-bit colors.

Hi,

I think you are confusing "32 bit color" with "32 colors", one does not
indicate the other. "32 bit" indicates that the video can produce 16.7
million different colors (also known as truecolor). I should think that
would be sufficient for nearly anyone, and is currently a standard for most
systems.

If you are referring instead to the color themes, then for the XP scheme
there are only 3 - that's it: blue, green, and silver. For classic theme
there are something like 22 schemes. There are sites like windowsblind.com
that offer additional ways of changing the desktop theme (and of course
there is a price for this too).

Nope, I don't think you can get more colours, unless of course you replace
your graphic card to some extremly excellent high end graphic card (I don't
think that is possible though).

Although you can't do this, you can always change the colour calibration of
your screen, for example you can do with with Adobe Gamma etc. I'm sure
there are many other applications out there. But basically this give you
better range of colours than you had originally (usually).

It is unlikely that an LCD display can produce more colors than your
choices;
32-bit color can display more than 16 million colors - each a mixture of
Red, Green, and Blue (each of the three primary colors has 256 possible
levels.)

A laptop would not be suitable for any application needing more than 32-bit
color.
