Along the lines of the post about getting simultaneous
animations to run...

PowerPoint 2000

I start the slide with an animated gif, but when I add
text, the addition of the text stops the animation of the
gif until all the text has shown up completely.

How can I run them simultaneously?

Thanks!

I'm surprised the GIF stops. You might try converting it to an AVI and
see if that helps. You'll want to check "continue slide show" on the
multimedia tab of the custom animation settings.

I converted one, but it also stops it's animation until
all the text is finished on the slide.

The option to continue slide show is greyed out for me.

Did you use Insert/Movies and Sounds/Movie from File when you inserted
the AVI? You should have an option to continue slide show if you used
that method for insertion.

If that doesn't do the trick, holler back and specify the way you
inserted the AVI and what your various animation settings are.

Okay, this is getting weird. Here's what I'm doing:

1. Renaming a .gif file with an .avi extension.
2. Insert > Movies and Sounds > Movie from File
3. Select the .avi file I from Step 1.

Nothing happens. Nothing is inserted into the slide.
Where does it go? I can inster a gif from the Gallery
into the slide without problem, but I still do not have an
active selection to continue the slide show.

Right now I don't have anything fancy setup as far as
animation settings go. I'm simply trying to get the
active gif and text to work together before I proceed any
further.

In a perfect world, I'd like a gif to show up on the
initial slide and then be able to continue it onto the
following slides while the text changes, but adding the
text chops it all up making it look awful.

I could have sworn I responded to this already, but I can't seem to find
my reply, so...

Renaming a GIF to AVI won't work. You need to convert the GIF to AVI
using something like GIF Construction Set. Specific info on doing this
is available at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/autorun_giftoavi.htm

Your steps 2 and 3 are exactly right, but because your file's not a
proper AVI, nothing's happening.

I wish I knew why your GIF won't work the way you want with the text,
but I don't. That's why I was suggesting trying the AVI. If you have a
regular AVI on your computer, you can use that to test with. Then, once
you know it will work, you can worry about converting your existing GIF
to AVI.
