Hi, my m-board takes PC4300 533mhz memory! Does this mean i can only get new memory that is PC4300 or can i get lower, say PC4200 or PC3200. I need to know this as i can only find PC4300 by Geil!! and i wouldn't mind buying corsair!! Thanx

As I said before ... DDR2 is not as common as DDR ... you have DDR2 and 533. If you want to "add too" then you will need to match it.

You can 'change' it for all 3200 but that will NOT run at 533 it is only 400 ... aint the numbers game fun.

Sorry to say but who ever 'sold' you the system did not point out the pitfalls of that system. Very common though.
:(

It was bought from alienware. Is there a massive difference between 533 and 400. Everyone seems to go for corsair and they do 3200 and 4200!!

At the moment the difference between DDR PC 3200 and DDR2 PC 4200 isnt as big as it should be, because of the CAS rating on the DDR2 chips, its pretty high so it slows the memory down taking away some of that 533Mhz speed. But its still faster than 3200.

If you have DDR2 PC4200 in your computer, you should match it with another stick of DDR2 PC4200. You should also try to match the make of the memory which the one you already have.

Dont mix DDR and DDR2 (i dont think DDR will fit in a DDR2 slot anyway) it will only end in tears.

So even though my comp comes with a standard 4300 chip, i could get rid of that completely and get some better 4200 chips that run at 533mhz and it shud work??? I am after 3 512 chips and so far have found some good ones by samsung, corsair and geil!!!

O sorry, I read the number wrong, all the times I said 4200 I meant 4300!

Just match with the memory you got, please.

You can put in what ever memory the mother board specs say are compatable. But remember, it will only work as fast as the slowest piece in the system. For instance on my pc it runs on 2x 512mb pc3200 (400 Mhz), now that card is a lot more pricey than another card which is 512mb pc2700 (333Mhz). So if I replace one of the pc3200 s with a 2700 then both cards run at the 2700 speed. Hope that makes sense, so infact adding the cheaper slower card (pc 2700) would make my system slower than if I had ONLY 1 pc3200.
