I have just rebuilt the Software partition of a machine conataining other
partitions holding files managed by an earlier XP set up.
I have been fiddling with the security for ages with no success. I can't
install software because virtually every file area is read only and I can
not find out how to reset this property..
In Windows Explorer/Properties for most of the important files, I have
ensured that all the files are 'owned' by the Administrators user group of
the machine's domaine. Under the Sharing properties tab, all the files are
shared with full control to everyone. Under the Security Tab all the groups
have all the facilities enabled.
When I Log on as an Administrator I find each file area is 'Read Only. If I
unset this, the system appears to do it, running through all the dependent
files . Yet when I re-examine the properties of the file they have all
reverted to 'Read Only'.
The result is a parlous condition where I can not even run Norton updates as
the system wants to update the appropriate routines in Program Files
Please some one help me to get out of this horrible mess
