Long story...

My wife's Samsung 17" CRT flat screen Syncmaster 753DF is going bad. It
gets the "jiggles" when cold, the image shaking, jiggling until warm-up.
When warmed up, it comes & goes randomly. Turns out that Samsung was
willing to RMA it. So a re-manufactured replacement is on the way.

Meanwhile to test it, just to be sure it was the monitor, I switched with
her. My monitor is a Samsung 17" CRT flat screen Syncmaster 700IFT (older
one, discontinued), a much nicer, higher res model. She is blown away by
it's sharpness, color, & brightness. She is unwilling to give it up once
the refurbished replacement arrives. =)

So I ordered new 19" Samsung from newegg.com. We can't afford top of the
line. This model Max / Optimal resolution: 1920x1440 @ 65 Hz / 1600x1200 @
76 Hz. After ordering it I reviewed the invoice & noticed that it is a
SyncMaster 997DF. DF!?!!?!

I am now worried that I am getting a larger version of the 753DF. It does
not appear to be a larger version of the 753DF, as it is can be ran at
1900x1440 res. There is a 955DF that has a max res of 1600x1200.

Anyone have any experience with this SAMSUNG SyncMaster 997DF? Should I
just send it back unopened? Any suggestions to a good CRT monitor?

I think you'll like the 997DF very much. A friend has one and the
display looks better to me than that of the 955DF I have. He loves
it! The 955DF is good too, just not as good as the 997DF. It's
definitely a solid step up.

One possible inconvenience with the 997 is that the controls are on
the side rather than the front. But that does make a neater looking
face. Also, the 997 has a smaller footprint than the 955 since it's
not as deep.

Excellent. Thanks for the fast reply. There is at least one person in
favor. Newegg reviews all seem to love the 997DF (take that with a grain of
salt). The DF named scared me is all... Sounds like the 997 has a similar
tube as the 700IFT. Sharp, bright, & colorful.

Samsung seems to back their stuff well... heck I called them on a Saturday
morning & they actually answered the phone. Plus they are RMA'n a tube
that is borderline, most likely, out of warrantee.

Anyone else have experience with these monitors?

In the future don't lend stuff to your wife :-)

I love it when I encounter users who have only worked on LCDs and then sit
down in front of a good CRT. They *always* comment on how much better an
image it is. I rue the day when CRTs will be a thing of the past.

I'm betting they'll still be around until LCDs are greatly improved or
— more likely — until somebody comes up with a better technology than
LCDs.
