monitor's brightness lowers when in a game...

i have my old crappy monitor hooked up because my lcd is out of
comission and its now impossible to play games like bf2 and source
because its so dark. i have the birghtness cranked up all the way on
my monitor and used my video card settings to raise the brightness and
gamma to where i like it. it works fine on the desktop but when i
enter any game it automatically goes darker, even with the games
brightness up all the way too.

when i minimize the game, the game will flash to the brightness that i
want it at before going back to the desktop and then it goes back to
being dark when i maximize the game again.

i have a radeon x700 video card if it helps. the monitor is a daytek
17" and its about 10 years old. any suggestions?

Your monitor is fading out due to it's age. 10 years for an inexpensive
monitor is a reasonable age for it to be failing.
