my son is running windows pro and when he boots the
computer up the monitor shuts down almost immediately, the
yellow light on the monitor is on but the monitor will not
turn on

It sounds as if the refresh rate and/or screen resolution is set higher than
the monitor can cope with. If you press F8 as Windows is starting up and
boot into safe mode, you'll be able to access display properties and set it
back to a screen resolution/refresh rate that's within the monitor's
capability.

Hope this helps

I'll second Oli's comments, the video adapter is sending a signal
incompatible with the monitor's specifications. F8 to safe mode and modify
refresh rate or delete + reinstall video adapter driver.
