My son's computer is acting up. When booting the monitor goes into sleep
mode and will not come on. Monitor or computer problem?

Thanks

First check all the connections, especially the connection to the monitor
and the back of the PC. If you can test this a) with another monitor cable,
b) with another monitor, do that.
I had this happen once and the engineer said that it usually meant a fault
in the Graphics card which is not as bad as it sounds because they can be
replaced quite easily in a modern PC.

Does the computer beep at startup, and how many times?.. you may have no
video output..

If the computer only beeps once and appears to be working, HDD light
flashing away, then the monitor or cable may be faulty.. try another monitor
to see what happens..

Does the monitor start up with the system, then suddenly go into standby?
This can happen if the Windows video settings are out of range of the
monitor. The monitor shuts down to avoid damage.

Power down, then turn the system on again.

Press F8 when booting, they way you would to get to Safe Mode, and look for
VGA mode. This will use the lowest-common-denominator video settings and
should start Windows. You will need to re-specify the display settings
within range of the monitor. If you've arranged things on the screen, they
will be moved around.

Right-click on the desktop, choose Properties. Click on the Settings tab.

Be sure that the monitor is correctly identified and use the "hide modes
this monitor cannot display" checkbox in the Monitor section, available by
clicking on Advanced. on the Settings page.
