Hey all, I have a Gateway 2100 ( FPD2185W) monitor thats not going
beyond the Gateway splash screen. It powers on and begins to flash the
word "Gateway" in the middle of the screen . This is as far as it
goes. It will not let me turn it off with the power button. The power
on\off just flashes blue. I Googled this and found that this monitor
uses something called EZ Tune. I downloaded, tried running it and got
the same results. Could the monitor be toast? Do you know of any other
ways that I could test this monitor? Any help would be great.
Thanks -J

That is not a diagnostic message...

The manual lists a built-in power supply, inside the monitor.
Perhaps that part of it, has gone bad, and every time the
monitor attempts to go to a full power state, the power
supply resets itself ? That might account for any "blinking".

My monitor has an external supply (wall adapter) and at least I
can test that separately, if I have any questions about its health.
A built-in supply, while neat and tidy, is more of an issue
when it comes time for maintenance.

What happens when you press the Input button that switches between vid
sources?

What happens if you hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it off?

The troubleshooting doesn't mention flashing blue LED power light. It
just says blue.

What happens if you turn it on with no video connection. Does the screen
say anything like no video?

Another thought that came to mind, is the AC power cord
could be loose, in its receptacle.

Nothing at all.

Nothing. It wont turn the monitor off.

I think Paul may be correct in his idea that the monitor is trying to
go to full power but is failing.
This may be the flashing blue light.

Nothing. There is no notice of loss of signal. But when the video
cable is not connected to the pc, you can see faint flashes of light.

Yeah.

You mean like it is trying to have enough power to say no signal in
those faint flashes?

Nothing at all.

Anyone ever change a built in power supply? Can't be that difficult or
can it?

Where would you find a replacement ?

    Paul

Maybe from another monitor with the same power specs? Or am I just
grasping at straws? Might be better off buying a new one instead of
electrocuting myself . Got an favorites when it comes to monitors, if
so pass along your opinions I would be glad to hear them. Thanks for
the inputs,positive as always.

I've repaired many of them simply by replacing the power supply
capacitors, especially the ones with expanded tops.

This is usually easy and inexpensive.

Before anything else you should swap it to a different computer and see
how it looks. Also put the good monitor on your computer and also see
how that works.

Or ... www.newegg.com

Look on eBay for the same monitor with a cracked screen for
a replacement power supply. Flat-screen monitors don't have
the high voltages that the CRTs do, so you're pretty safe if
you follow the standard precautions.

After doing a bit of follow up reading about this monitor, it seems
that this is considered a high end monitor. One site even goes as far
as to say that "these are one of the best made". This may be worth
getting repaired, if the price is right. There are a few repair
centers in the GTA. I will contact them for some quotes and go from
there. Has anyone used a reliable repair shop that they would
reccommend? I also look on Ebay, but am a little leary of the the dead
on delivery thing, just because the bezel is cracked or the screen
isn't working , doesn't mean that it will fire up when these issues
have been resolved.-J

$35.00 (parts and labour). with a 120 day warranty. thanks again to
all for your efforts.-J

How did he describe the problem, repair, and replacement parts?

How did he describe the problem, repair, and replacement parts?

He said it was bad caps. related to the internal power supply. Four
were replaced. I will pick it up on Monday.-J

I don't have either "hands-on" or a datasheet on that monitor.. sorry.

Goog/Bing on "FPD2185W".

Bing brings up a bunch of capacitor issues related to this.
(that's what makes me think it's "onboard")

I suspect the power supply is part of the main circuit board tho. I'm
not trying to brag, but board repairs are a bitch unless you've got
experience with desoldering/soldering and getting cap polarities
correct; I do... (50 years of practice helps).

My advice (as much as I dislike it) is to buy a new monitor.

Old surprises still exist.

I just heard Elton John's "Talking Old Soldiers" for the
first time. I have no idea how this gem never accessed my
brain before.

It's so damned real to me. Been dere, dun dat.

Just for archive purposes (Usenet searches for other folks); what did
they find? Did they specify what they found?

I'm just a bit anal on this from a technician standpoint.
