The past couple of times that I have booted the computer the monitor comes
on at 640x480 resolution even though I have a notebook with a 1028 by 768
display. I reset the graphics to 1024x768, but at the next boot up it
reverts to 640x480. This is a new problem, and I am running XP sp3.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Download the latest video drivers from your notebook
manufacture's web site and install.

I did that a few days before this problem started! I installed a
graphics driver, but should I be looking for a chipset driver or a
monitor driver. Both appear separately in the device manager.

I had something similar. My regular resolution was 1280x1024. When Windows
XP would start, it would start in 1280x1024 but the resolution would revert
to 640x480. It turned out that one of the programs that automatically
started when Windows started (as specified in the registry HKLM -> Software
-> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run) was set to run in compatibility mode
with 640x480 resolution. The program would start and change the resolution
of my display.
When I unchecked compatibility mode, the resolution stayed at 1280x1024.
