I have a Sony Trinitron Monitor that for the last couple of months has
started randomly shutting down. My computer still runs, but the monitor
just intermittently powers down. I either have to force a reboot of the
computer or unplug the monitor and plug it back in after a couple of
minutes.

It will do this after a couple of minutes or after a couple of hours. There
is no pattern that I can tell. It usually does this after I click on my web
browser link, but it has happened when typing as well.

Can anyone figure out what is going on?

Loose connection? Damaged cable? Bad electronics?

Until you find out what's wrong... What happens if you turn the monitor off
and then back on again? The reason that I ask is that plugging/unplugging
the monitor into a powered system is not very safe for the monitor or the
rest of the system.

I have the exact same problem, and so does my son. Both of us using legal
upgrades to XP. I think this is something to do with windows, since 3 of use
have this problem... I sure wish I could figure this out. I have been able to
get it to come back once or twice using Windows button +l and then tabbing
and enter to get it to come back...
