My monitor is currently displaying only 16 colours at 800
by 600. It's capable of displaying 32 bit color at 1280 by
1024 but I cannot change the settings to that. When I try
to change the settings under advanced properties in the
display control panel, I am not able to select the
properties under the monitor tab, so I can't update the
driver. Furthermore, the monitor does not even show up
under the device manager in hardware. I'm working on Dell,
monitor #E771p. Anyone out there know what the heck is
going on?

W2K is using basic VGA, its default setting. IMO, there are four
possibilities: a) W2K has lost the drivers/resource file for your monitor
type; b) the video card's drivers are corrupted; c) the video card is
misbehaving, perhaps on its way to the great dumpster in the sky; d) the
monitor's firmware is corrupted (the onboard program that enables it to
communicate with your computer, which it needs to do to go to sleep, etc.)

I'd try reinstalling the video drivers, etc first. If that doesn't work, I'd
take the monitor to another box, and see if it can be set to the proper
resolution. If so, the video card is the most likely culprit.

Sorry I don't have an answer, but I have having the EXACT
same problem as you are, but my monitor is a Gateway
EV700. If I do find an answer, I will post it for you.
Maybe you could do the same?
Thanks, Andy
