I have a 17" Viewsonic GF775 hooked up to a GeForce2 MX card. On occasion,
when the computer is turned on or when I wake up the monitor from power
saving mode, the screen remains blank and the green power light flashes.
Does this indicate some kind of hardware failure?

Thanks, Brian

What is required to rectify this? Does turning the monitor off and on
again result in a picture or does the machine have to be rebooted?

Had the monitor been disconnected from AC or powered off by
front-switch or did it "decide" what mode to go into itself when the
system shuts off or sleeps?

A more exact description of what happens when, including the
situations when it does work, might help.

Is it possible to test another machine with the monitor or vice-versa?

The problem is intermittent. It has occured when I came home from work and
turned on the monitor and computer. It has also occured when coming out of
power saving mode when the computer has been on and I've been away from it
for some time. The monitor cannot be turned off using the power switch when
this occurs. Plugging out the monitor for a few minutes sometimes helps.
Rebooting the computer doesn't seem to help. I have checked cable
connections and video card seating.

So you're confident that the computer itself does POST, boot when
turned on, you just don't get a display?

How about the AC power? Is the wiring in good shape, the circuit
isn't overloaded or anything and no chance of AC power problem?

Assuming the computer itself is still functioning and AC power is OK
it would seem to be a fault in the monitor, but that's pretty much
what you already suspected, right? Monitors aren't really user
serviceable, if you were competent to work on one you probably
wouldn't have posted here?

You might open the monitor and examine it, but beware of high voltage
and don't touch anything. Of course the safer bet is to evaluate it's
worth to decide whether to take to a repair shop.

If it's not hardware failure.
Sometimes it's the Video Sync is not picked up by P.O.S.T as it's
booting too fast I've found on some mother boards.Setting a no,"Fast
Boot" option in the BIOS can correct some and or a BIOS update. It can
also be a weak power supply/CMOS battery or weak CMOS battery
re-charge circuit.
