Monitor picture squeezed on sides

I have a NEC FE700+ Monitor running XP home. I notice when the monitor goes
to sleep for a while or I turn it off for a while(and leave computer on),
when I turn it back on the sides of the monitor are squeezed in about a 1/4"
on both sides. Then when it warms up the picture is normal again.

Does anyone know if this is a problem with the monitor or maybe the video
card? The monitor is still under warranty so I may take it in for service if
that is the problem.

Thanks in advance
Colin

I would assume that is normal for a cold CRT. You might
contact NEC support and ask them.

Does the monitor have any hum or buzzing sounds, or any
other problems?

Thanks for the reply.

No I haven't noticed any other problems. I don't think the sides used to
squeeze in. It seems like it started when I converted my c: drive to ntfs
from fat32 using partition magic8 but I'm not 100% sure of that. I talked to
NEC but not a technician, they didn't know what I meant and said I could
bring it in for service if I wanted to. I guess I'll let them look at it and
see what they say. Hope they don't make it worse!

Thanks again
Colin

A change from FAT32 to NTFS should not effect the display.
But it takes several thousand volts, maybe 25,000 to drive
the electron gun and the magnetic coils that aim the
electron stream at the tube. When the monitor is off or in
stand-by the transformers power down, the magnetic fields
collapse and the tube cools off. As long as the picture
returns to the full screen, the colors are correct and the
display is in focus, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
But I would file a service report and talk to the service
techs and make sure there was a report on file (get a copy
for yourself) so if it fails two days after the warranty
expires you can still get it fixed.

When a picture shrinks top to bottom it is usually a failing
transformer that won't put out the proper voltage or the
large capacitor that stores that voltage is starting to
short-out. (This applies to monitors and TV sets)

Since the cost of parts and paid service will approach the
cost of a new CRT monitor or go a long way to the
replacement with a LCD flat screen,

OK thanks Jim, I'll try that, but right now I think I'd better try and get
some more sleep. It's the wee hours of the morning here on the west coast of
Canada and it's turning into a long night. It sounds like your up late as
well or else on the other side of the world?

Cheers
Colin

It would be wise to substitute another monitor, as a test. If that
monitor has no problems then bring the failing monitor in for service; the
power supply may be sagging.

Getting old is a bitch, but it is better than the
alternative. Like my dentist said to me about 50 years ago,
"Halitosis is better than no breath at all."

| Yeah I hear you, ditto here as well...
