Ctlr+Alt+Del & start closing down stuff running....all the time
listening closely for a change of tune (nah, kidding) for the noise to
stop. The only thing that CAN hum in the monitor is the tiny speaker/s
so if you can, mute them/it.

I tend to hum a few
bars while in an
hour glass mode.

can you name that
tune your monitor
is playing?

Not necessarily true. If it's a CRT monitor, there are plenty of things in
it that can cause a humming sound.

If it's a CRT type (big, bulky things probably 15 inches front to back,
or even more, with a picture tube in it) there are many things that can
make them hum, especially if you mean when you start applications. It
could be signalling its own demise, in fact.
Have you moved anything near to it since the humming started that
didn't used to be there or rearranged the desktop?

Does your monitor have speakers in it or mounted to it? The hum could
come from teh speakers and have nothing to do with the monitor.

If it's an LCD type monitor, the thin type compared to the CRT types, I
know of nothing that would make them hum. Try moving it up, down, side
to side, and see if the hum stops or changes what it sounds like.

Can you describe what the hum sounds like? Sometimes they can sound like
the hum you hear under power lines or transformers on the telephone
poles, etc.. Is it constant or more like static? Does it always seem to
have the same loudness and sound? Does the display on the monitor
change at all, ever? Are the colors right all over the screen, is part
of the screen distorted, etc. etc. etc.. Try turning off printers,
scanners, etc., and see if the hum stops or goes away. What's behind
the monitor that could make a humming noise?
Give as much info as you can; the more the better to assist you with
this problem.

I suspect it's someting along the lines of "When the dummies come
marching in" or the like. What a waste.
