Hello- I am trying to upgrade from 98 to 2000. the report
generated during the install indicates that my monitor is
incompatible. I attempted to find the proper driver but i
was unable to find one- I accessed tech support from the
company that I had purchased the computer from. they told
me to download and install a new driver for my video card
and the problem would take care of itself. The driver is
intended only for 2000, will this work, and if it does,
what do i do first, install the driver on my current os
and then upgrade to 2000 or do i upgrade and then install.
Thanks very much

Most monitors will word with a generic/default/plug-and-play monitor. Video
cards are OS specific most times. If your card is older W2K may already have
a driver for it although in your case it sounds like not. The manufacturer's
driver may have a few more features or tweaks.

Do NOT load a W2K video driver into W98. This might mess something up.
Preferably you will back-up data, format the drive, and load a fresh copy of
W2K. From here you will be able to tell if your video driver is working or
not in the Device Manager or if it has loaded a basic VGA driver. If not,
then install the new driver. The driver download site should give
instructions. You may have to do this with other hardware (modems, sound
cards, etc.).

From there continue to install software and bring your data back in. A
simple upgrade will make this part easier since programs and data will be
left intact, but it WILL NOT (usually) fix Windows problems, or upgrade
hardware that W2K does not have drivers for.

There are a number of sites that are helpful in doing a clean install of an
OS, W2K included.
