Monitor Images Distorted

Images that should be square on my computer monitor are now clearly
rectangular (they're longer up and down). Text also gets distorted in
the same way.

I tried changing the monitor settings, using the menu that comes by
pressing the buttons on the monitor. However, I've succeeded in making
the image ALMOST square only by squeezing the vertical monitor image
as thin as it would go, so that only about three-fifths of the
vertical size of the screen is available for my applications.

It's a 4-year old ADI Microscan monitor, with otherwise fine
resolution and color quality.

Any ideas?

Could be your video card. Check it for signs of degradation, etc. I doubt
it's your monitor; mine's about as old as the dinosaurs and it still works
perfectly at 1280x1024 32-bit. How old is your video card? Were you
overclocking it?

You've got to be right. I just tried a different monitor and the
problem remains.

It's a new computer, so I know I didn't physically get into the guts
of the machine. Is there a way to test whether the retailer did
something?

Thanks for your help!
