Hi,

my beast of a monitor (Panasonic E110, crt) - several years old now - flickers
once in a while (say once an hour). It started this about 4 weeks ago.
Aside from being annoying, this is bad news as I expect the monitor is
on the way out.

Can anyone tell me if this means my monitor is dying (even if it's a slow
death). Plus - is this dangerous? How will it die? With a bang + smoke or
a whimper?

Is there anything I can do to restore it's health? Such as removing dust
inside (I've read the stored change long after powerdown warnings!).

Thanks,

That flicker could be caused by a number of things. It could be the
cable, the power cord, a loose connection either at the monitor or
computer, the video card or the motherboard. It could even be
something happening in your OS or with a program. Of course, the
monitor could be at fault as well.

Once you've checked out everything you can, try connecting the monitor
to another computer to see if the problem is still there.

When a monitor starts going, there's no way to know whether it will be
fast or slow. Most I've seen bite the dust have got worse over a
period of time.

Also just check out how much power you're using. My monitor is
flawless unless I turn on a house fan from the same circuit, then it
starts to flicker some. So try turning things off if you can and see
if it stops.

My monitor has always had a slight flicker, because the electricity supply
is less than constant (it waxes and wanes somewhat). Oddly, it flickers less
if I plug it directly into the surge protector, rather than directly into
the wall. The flickering also lessened when I built this system because the
AGP is 8x (and it didn't much care for my old system which had a 9700 Pro
plugged into a 4x port). This one has an x800 XT plugged into an 8x port
(obviously) and things are better (though by no means perfect). The monitor,
by the way, is a Sony F520.

It could well be dust. That encourages arcing from the high
voltage supplies within it, which can be 20 KV or so. Once it
arcs it takes a bit for the HV to build up again.

You need grounding wands and great caution when mucking about
within the case - also let it sit disconnected from power for a
good period before opening. Those beasts can have a lethal bite.

Your problem is caused by bad capacitors. The capacitor first starts to
sweat, by now it is probebly leaking. In normal cases this is yust
anoying but with Panasonic or Viewsonic there are printlanes ???? ,
coper wires on the print, whitch will oxidate an eventualy rot an cause
sparks.

Could be very dangeraus, dying might vary from slow and with a wispher
to BANG, smoke and even fire.

Like someone els said, start shopping for a new one.

My 14" monitor is unbranded and flicker free after 6 years.

So much for paying more for better quality.
