Monitor Flickering and Shrinking

I built this computer about 2 years ago. And its been working fine
untill now.

AMD XP +2100
MSI KT3 Ultra2
1024mb DDR 2700 ram
Powercolor Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB DDR
80GB Maxtor HDD

I upgraded from a GeForce3 to my Radeon about 6 months ago. Last
month, I began to have problems with my screen.
It began as two horizontal lines that would flicker(not the small
lines that are always present on flatscreens). Over the past few
weeks, they began to flicker more often and about 2 weeks ago, the
screen would flicker AND shrink. The top 1/4 and the bottem 1/4 would
shrink toward the center...The middle 1/2 would remain fine. The
shrinking and flickering happens very fast, but is not constant and
seems to be totally random.

I suspected maby my videocard wasnt getting enough power because I had
a crappy PSU, so I got a Thermaltake 480watt PSU.
My case has 6 fans in it and slot fans above and below the videocard.
It runs a regular 31 degrees celcius(room temp is 25).

I then suspected my monitor, so I took it to a friends house and tried
it on his system. I ran it for 2 hours with no problems. On my
system, it usually takes 2 min for the problem to occure.

I have tired new ATI drivers, monitor drivers, ATI omega drivers. I
pulled the video card, cleaned it and reinstalled it.

Any help would be great.
 
Well, if your monitor tests fine on another system, then I guess you could
say that your video card is dying.
 
Generally, a defective video card does not cause the video on
the monitor to shrink vertically.
I would suspect that you have a bad solder connection on the
vertical output IC in the monitor. Moving the monitor to another
computer may have closed the bad connection for a short time,
but the problem will return. You can try slapping the sides
of the monitor the next time the shrinking occurs to see if
the picture returns to normal. If it does, you definately
have a bad solder connection.
I would open the monitor and re-solder the connections on
the vertical IC.

slapping the sides makes it go away for a bit.
anyone have pics or a guid for the procedure?
 
sorry to bump, but how do i locate the item to solder? i cannot find
anything online about it.
 
The verticalcircuit mainly consist of one IC on a heatsink and some
resistors and capacitors. In case of a NEC monitor look for a LA7XXX
or a LA4XXX IC on a heatsink. Check the joints on the IC's and
surrounding components. Also check the connectors that are connected
to the tube, especialy the yellow and brown wire, where you plug them
om your board.

Because you ask for help i have assumed that you know something about
electronics, voltages, basiccomponents and overall laws in dealing
with electrical apparatus (unplug the powercord before toughing
anything). If you don't know anything about electronics, or get zapped
anyway i won't take responsebility.

Good luck and be carefull, because being zapped hurts like (enter

I've had the very same problem, but I managed to fix it myself.
So here's what You should do:
disconnect the monitor :)
-> open it up (2 screws in the back of the screen, 3 clips on top
of the screen : just pres the holes, and two clips on the back-bottom
othe screen
-> get to the mainboard an take the metal casing off (about 12
screws)
You do not need to disconnect any cables from the board.
-> while looking at the board from the bottom side when the monitor
is facing down, the most probable bad soldering is on the right side.
In my case it were the transistors screwed to the big heat sinkers on
the right (You can't miss them)
-> I reseldered all of them just in case and *voila*, when put back
together the monitor was working great.

unfortunately only when I reconnected the monitor I rememberd that i
did not want the middle board screws, but since it is not my monitor
I've put them where I found them. Nevertheless I think that it would'n
hurt do leave them alittle loose, as the stress made to the board,
while moving the monitor, will surely (in time) bring the problem
back.

Tahnks ya all for the info on what to do (found in this topic) i do
have another monitor to be fixed, but I will start a new topic for it.

I upgrade my video card to R9600 pro but I got a blank screen.
upgraded Bios but still didn't work
