I bought an HP computer in 2001 which had Windows ME as the operating system.
Several months ago I upgraded to Windows XP(I mention this only because I
think it may be pertinent to my problem, I can't say the monitor problem
started with the change to the XP operating system I just know it was
sometime afterwards). My HP monitor screen began to appear slightly pink and
this was intermittent. The pink tinge has disappeared or my eyes are just use
to it now, but I see "gray lines" that alternate with whiter lines
horizontally all the way across the screen. I tried the XP troubleshooter for
monitors and had no success solving my problem. I in fact could not find the
correct question for my problem within the troubleshooter. In frustration I
bought a new flat panel monitor today and installed it. My problem still
exists, so that says it must not be the monitor. Does anyone know what the
problem might be? Is it a hardware issue with my CPU, or does it have to do
with my BIOS or possibly display adapter, etc?

If the same problem exists with a different monitor, your video card is
dying. Since a video card installed in a WinME box is quite elderly, this
is unsurprising. Uninstall the video card and swap it out for a
known-working one.
