Hi,

I couldn't get my monitor to work in 256 colour, went
into display setting and discover it only have 16 and 32
bit but not 256 colours. But when I check on my sis
monitor who is using a old model but the same brand
(philip) as mine, it has 16, 32 and 256. Any idea how I
could overcome this problem?

Hello -
this is functionality/restriction in the video card driver
rather than a monitor issue. Check for an updated driver.

This is less a function of the monitor than the video card and drivers in
the computer. That may account for the difference between your system and
your sisters.
Are you trying for LESS colors, or more?? 16bit color has 65536 different
colors (including black, which IS a color), 32bit has over 16 million. 256
color video is just that, 256 colors. It is a major step DOWN in video
quality. I am wondering if perhaps you are trying for more colors, and are
possibly just confused by the way they are represented.
Assuming that you really DO want less colors, you need to find out what
video adapter you have, and what drivers may be available that will allow
fewer colors. Also, and perhaps one of the more experienced WinXP gurus will
correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe that WindowsXP will work with
256 color video.

Owen, if you need 256 colors for a specific program, right click on it and
select Properties. You can select an option there to run that program
with 256 colors.

If for some reason, you want to run with 256 colors at all times, go to
Display> Settings> Advanced> Adapter. Check box to "List all modes." Go
back to Display> Settings and you should now have other settings listed.

NOTE: I have no idea what hardware you're using or its capabilities. I'm
just relating where the Windows settings are that can help you to achieve
a setting of 256 colors.

Owen, 2² = 2^2 = 2 x 2 = 4
2³= 2^3 = 2 x 2 x2 = 8
2^4 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16
.........
2^8*= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 256*
.........
2^16 = 2 x 2 x .....etc. = 65 536
........
2^32 = 2 x 2 x .....etc. = 4 294 967 296

*Do you really want 8-bit colours (i.e. 256 colours)?
