For no reason red narrow horizontal lines in vertical columns have appeared
on the screen. I've tried everything to get rid with no success. Is this a
graphic card problem perhaps. I'm using Windows XP Professional and a Compaq
nc8230 notebook. Please can anyone help?

Sounds like a hardware failure, get a laptop repairer (or HP) to look at it.

PS Back up your data, photos, music etc BEFORE you do this.

Is the notebook under warranty ?

It could be that the LCD panel has failed. That doesn't sound
like a GPU problem. Some desktop LCD monitors have failed like
that, with lines on the screen.

I checked, and one web site claims the GPU is "ATI Mobility Radeon X600".
So it probably isn't a failing Nvidia GPU chip, since the chip is
made by ATI. (GPU = graphics card)

If you send the notebook for service, back up your user
data just in case. Repair facilities have been known
to reformat the hard drive, even if told explicitly not
to erase it. They still do it anyway. So back up the
data, before seeking repair.
