The monitor on my sony notebook has suddenly changed. Upon booting up, the
monitor screen appears split into four sections. There are two/four identical
images of windows xp running side by side and there are two/four indentical
cursers. I can still navigate as one window and curser is working "normally".
I went to the bios and the screen is split there also. I went to system
restore and restored computer to day previous to onset of this problem. A
sony tech over the phone said it is probably a damaged video card ($700
repair). Any other recommendations? canyonlady.

Since the problem occurs before the operating system is loaded (in the
BIOS), this is a hardware problem and Sony tech support is correct.

With the price of portables (not Sony) either try to change your own video
card if available for your model or consider another computer.
