Monitor Display Problem

I wiped out Window XP home edition and installed Window
2000 on a HP machine. Now the monitor can only displays
640 by 480 pixels with 16 colors. This setting is the
only choice I have, and every time when I try to change
the setting to 800 by 600 pixels (the highest I have now)
and click Ok->Ok->Yes, the monitor doesn't do any change.
I downloaded the monitor driver from HP, but Window 2000
doesn't recognize the driver. From Monitor tab (Control
Panel->Display->Setting tab->Advanced button), the
Property button is disabled (grayed), and Refresh
Frequency has only the choice of "Use hardware default
setting." Also, I don't see Display Adapter listed under
Device Manager. Can anyone give an instruction of how to
solve the problem?

Hi, Bob I,
I have downloaded the driver for the display adapter at
HP web site, but Window 2000 didn't recognize it. The
monitor I have is HP v72 17" monitor, and the drive I
downloaded was "HP v 72 inch display." I don't know
whether the driver that I downloaded was wrong, or it was
due to Windows problem. Can you give more detailed
instructions? Thanks.

You need a driver for your display adapter, sometimes also called a video
card. You downloaded a driver for your monitor, which is not the same
thing.

Please press the Win + Pause key, select Hardware, and then Device
Manager. There should be an entry that says Display adapter and also one
that says Monitor. The "Display adapter" is in the Computer and the
"Monitor" attaches to it. As Mike B says the Display adapter can also be
refered to as a video card. It may also be known as a graphics card or
adapter. But either way until the proper driver for Display Adapter/
Video card is installed the problem will continue. And the "Monitor" can
not be identified(because the adapter needs the driver) so the "Monitor"
file which you aquired won't be used either.
