I purchased a new Viewsonic 19" LCD wb monitor and a GeForce 6200 video card.
I was using the onboard VGA and wanted to switch to VDI cabling. When I
installed the monitor and drivers, it worked fine. When I installed the
video card and drivers and hooked up the DVI cable it worked fine also, but
when I tried to play a DVD the CPU froze up. All memory was consumed.

I downloaded new drivers for the card and then it would play DVD movies but
I noticed the resolution wasn't crisp anymore. I then looked to change the
resolution on the monitor and discovered the System Devices no longer
recognized a monitor was even installed. The monitor was playing strickly
off the video card but the nVidia drivers and softward for the monitor would
no longer work. I can't even manually install the monitor and run it off
it's own drivers for better resolution.

what do I do next to have my monitor run off it's own drivers while still
use the video card drivers for the card alone?

First you need to uninstall the drivers for the onboard video....then upon
reboot enter your BIOS and find where to turn onboard video OFF.......this
will release its memory for other uses.
Now install your new video card and connect the monitor and reboot.XP will
load its "generic" drivers.
Now load the NVidia drivers for your 6200 card...they should have come with
the card on a CD
Then find the the .icm file for your specific monitor and install
that...again should have come on a CD with the monitor..mine did.
Now all you need to do is fine tune the settings to match your LCD monitors
native resolution

I tried this and now have a greater problem. I tried to change back over to
the on-board vga by changing the BIOS setting and was going to remove the
GeForce card. When I rebooted, the system wanted to do a chkdsk. I let it
and when that ended, the screen froze and in the background (through the
speakers) I could hear Windows load. The screen freezes on the message that
the chkdsk process is finished.

I tried to open Win in Safe Mode, but that wants to do a chkdsk also, which
still freezes up. I'm afraid I have a real mess and don't know what to do to
get past the error and load Windows. I tried opening it in other modes but
they freeze too.
