i have a AST ASTVision7U monitor and have managed to mangle the cable , what
i need to know is ...are monitor cables "standard" - will an old one lying
around at work be ok to use.

I dont wanna risk any damage - so i just thought i'd ask you knowledgeable
folks.

Thanks in advance

Dave :)

If the monitor end is hard wired you have to match the pin-outs on a
new one. If its a plug in you should be able to use any old monitor
cable with the same ends.

You should use a continuity meter to verify that the internal connector
matches the pinout on the plug, swapping wires to different positions if
necessary. If the connector itself is different then use continuity meter
to get pinout of old cable and splice the new cable wires to the old
cable's connector.

it is detachable but appears to have different pins to my old monitor.

i have heard that not all pins maybe wired and only some "common" ones are
used...

my old one has for example....

(looking at lead..)

top row......3 pins.......then 2 missing
midle row 3 pins...1 missing....1 pin
bottom row....all pins there

hmmm

can i do any damage by trying it......i assume they only carry signal and
not any form of power

thanks again

Dave :)
