I have this fairly old 15" CRT Viglen Envy TDS monitor which i've just
replaced. It's never been very bright, even with the brightness
settings at 100%. I'm not sure it's anything to do with age, it's been
like that as long as i can remember. I was wondering, before i throw
it out, if there's any technical reason for this, or if i've just had
a dodgy monitor all these years?

Since it always had poor brightness then perhaps it was never properly calibrated. You can take the cover off
and use a screw-driver to adjust any pot with "brightness" or "contrast" written under it.

Be EXTREMELY careful if you do this. Older monitors, even if they've
been unplugged for days, can carry a lethal jolt in their capacitors.
Before people finally figured out that they couldn't fix their own
televisions themselves, electrocutions happened now and then because
folks thought they'd be safe just because the box was unplugged. Just
be very careful what you touch inside there.

If you've only tried the brightness setting on the monitor itself, you
might try adjusting the gamma via Windows. Right click on your
wallpaper, choose properties, on the settings tab, click the Advanced
button. Here it gets a little personalized - on one of the tabs should
be a brightness or gamma setting. Trying finding and playing with these
settings - sometimes it helps.

Does your monitor take an unusually long amount of time to come up when
turned on, and does the brightness increase only after it's been on for
awhile? These would definitely mean a dodgy monitor in need of
replacement. Mine usually lose their red color after a time, which not
only darkens the image, but makes colors screwey too.
