I re-formatted my Dell computer and installed Windows XP. Windows used a
default driver for the monitor. How do I install the correct drivers? I
tried going thru control panel/display/settings/advance/monitor but the
properties button is not accessible.

You don't want monitor drivers; you want the video card drivers. After a
clean install of Windows, you need to then install the drivers for all your
hardware. This would be your chipset (motherboard), video, audio, network,
modem, etc.

You might have a received a Dell Resource CD when you got the machine. The
drivers will be on there. Put the cd in the drive, install it, and follow
directions.

If you didn't get a Resource CD, then go to Dell's tech support website for
your specific model machine and download the drivers you need.

The monitor "driver" he mentions, is usally an *.inf file that gets the make
and model corrctly listed in device manager.

I'm quite aware of that, thanks. In very few cases is it necessary to
worry about the monitor .inf file. The OP's problem is that he did a
clean install of Windows and did not install hardware drivers. When he
installs the video card drivers, his display will be fine.
